The Attitude. Part II
Everything is in our minds: Peter was born with an illness called ectrodactylism. When he came out his mother's womb, doctors said he would never walk, he would never take care of himself and he would never live a normal life. He did not have palms in his hands, his legs and arms were very short and the left leg had a kind of stump with three toes that were amputated when he was five years old. When his parents got over the blow, they intended to give him a the possibility of living a normal life. They gave him all the love they could, so he would be strong and he could be independent from them. "You are disabled as long as you wish it", his father used to tell him. They involved him in sports. He was encouraged to make all that he wanted to do in his heart. And they taught him to think positively. "Something my parents did not do was allow me to feel sorry about myself or that I take advantage of my physical disability", Peter says. Peter thanks the encouragement and training his parents gave him, but I don't think he understood the real importance of his achievements until he went to university and he got in touch with somebody who wanted to meet him. He got a phone call from somebody who had read abut his success on tennis and Peter accepted to meet him in a restaurant from that area. When he stood up to give his hand to this man who wanted to meet him, he realized he had the hand just like him. Peter was touched to have found somebody with an illness similar to his, but older that maybe he could help him as a mentor. However, after talking to him some minutes, he found out he was wrong. He said this: "Instead, I found with somebody embittered, with a pessimistic attitude that blamed everybody for his disappointments in life and fails in his anatomy. Soon I found out that our lives and attitudes could not be more different...he had never been in a Job for long time and he was sure it was because of "discrimination", which was denied for his own confession since he was always late, he was absent frequently and was not responsible for his own work. His attitude was: "The world is in debt with me" and his problem was that the world dissented with him. He even got angry with me because I did not share his desperation. We kept in touch for many years, until I convinced myself that even with a miracle that make him have a perfect body his unhappiness and lack of success would never change. He would be in the same place in his life. That man allow the failure control his inner being. There are probabilities that our adversities are far from the ones from this man. For that reason his history is inspiring. Peter says: "the obstacles can limit us only if we allow them". This is that way not only with the physical aspect, but with the emotional and intellectual...I think that the real limitations and permanents born in our minds, not in our bodies. The attitudes determine our actions. You are not what you think you are. We ourselves can be love or victims of our attitudes. It is a personal decision; a blessing or a curse. What is an attitude? Is the best of our own egos. Her roots are internal, but her fruits are external. Is our best friend or our worst enemy. Is more honest and more consistent that our own words. Is an outer appearance based on our past experiences. Is something that attracts or repels people. Is not satisfied until she expresses. Is the librarian of our past. Is who talks about our present. Is the prophetess of our future. Nothing can avoid that a man with the right mental attitude achieve his goal; nothing in life can help a man with an attitude mentally wrong.
